Summerween: How to celebrate Halloween vibes in the summer heat

Summerween? Yes, it's a thing! ๐ŸŽƒ

So last Saturday night I had the urge to watch Hocus Pocus for the first time this year. We looove Halloween in our house and as we get closer to the fall months, we are getting excited!

This led me to searching Pinterest for some homeschool Halloween ideas for this year and then I saw an image titled: Summerween ideas. Summerween? I had never heard of it but, a trip to winners/homesense this week confirmed that this was a thing.

Ghosts in inflatable flamingos, candles with carved watermelon and pineapple, cute pillows, and my favorite, the skin care pumpkins and ghosts ๐Ÿ‘ป

๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‰ What is summerween?

Summerween is a made-up holiday thatโ€™s gained traction in recent years (thanks, TikTok and Tumblr!) where Halloween lovers bring that eerie, fun, and festive October energy into the summer months. It usually happens around late July โ€” exactly 100 days before Halloween โ€” but you can celebrate any time the mood strikes.

Itโ€™s a mix of fall aesthetics and summer fun, like:

Orange and black beach towels

Sโ€™mores by bonfire light with spooky stories

Pool floats shaped like coffins, ghosts, and black cats

Popsicles that look like eyeballs

And of course... costumes with flip flops

Of course social media has meant that summerween has become an actual thing especially Tiktok and Instagram and I am here for it!

How you can celebrate Summerween

Jack o melon carving. So obviously instead of the traditional pumpkin, a watermelon is a must for summerween.

Spooky snacks and drinks. Pinterest is full of cute ideas! From dipped strawberries to hot dogs that look like bloody fingers!

Themed decor and costumes. Why not throw a summerween party and make use of your Halloween decorations and costumes more than once this year? This is a really great idea for children as an end of summer event. A spooky pool party or a scary movie marathon would be unforgettable!

Ghost story campfire. This is a really great way to blend summer and Halloween! A spooky campfire with ghost stories. You could do this during the summer nights as then sun sets with smores!

Movie Marathon under the stars. You could set up an outdoor projector or bring your laptop and cozy blankets outside.

Few movie ideas:

Hocus pocus 1 & 2

Coraline

Hotel Transylvania

Monster House

Bring popcorn and some other Halloween themed snacks.

Dress up for a Summerween picnic. Pick a picnic spot, load up your basket with spooky snacks and put on your costume! You could even take your favorite activities and games and combine summer activities whilst dressed in your Halloween costume.

Glow in the dark dance party. Another cute idea for children! Turn out the lights, grab some glow sticks, and turn up the music. I did something similar with my kids one year and we taped the glow sticks to our clothes.

So if you are patiently waiting for summer to end so that you can put on your witches hat, you don't need to! You can do it right now ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ
