10 Ways to style your kitchen island: Feng Shui aligned
The kitchen is such an important room in any home, and the kitchen island is usually the center point where energy moves around and throughout your home. Is your kitchen island allowing positive energy to flow? Let’s find out.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where meals are made, and life happens but, let’s be honest. It is also where clutter collects.
This week i just felt like my kitchen island needed to breathe. There where books, about 6 water bottles, and random objects from all over the house placed here. I clean it weekly, but i always find it quickly becomes a clutter magnet. Even though i know it won’t stay clutter free all week, i know that i can style it in ways that can help minimize the chaos and help energy to flow better.
So, if you need help with your kitchen island, stick around.
Why styling your kitchen island matters
In Feng Shui, the kitchen represents nourishment, abundance, and health.
A cluttered and chaotic island, creates visual stress and stagnant energy. Whether you have a small apartment island, or a large modern kitchen centerpiece, these ideas will help you create a look that feels calm and will radiate abundance throughout your entire home.
Anchor it with a statement centerpiece
If you are unsure on where to start, start with one oversized statement piece.
This could be:
A large vase with branches
A marble bowl
Flowers in a large vase
A heavy fruit bowl, filled with ripe fruit
Keep it centered if your island doesn’t have a sink or stove. Also, if you have a small island, make sure that the statement piece is to scale and doesn’t look out of place.
2. Use decorative trays
Grab a tray like this HERE
Trays are excellent decor pieces that serve a purpose. According to Feng Shui, trays help contain energy. So, if your kitchen island collects everyday objects like keys, and mail, use trays to help contain the energy so that, that chaotic energy isn’t circulating around your home.
3. Add fresh flowers for soft, feminine flow
Fresh flowers instantly elevate a kitchen. They soften hard stone surfaces, and bring life.
You don’t need elaborate arrangements, grocery store flowers work, and you can pick them up any time.
From a Feng Shui perspective, flowers symbolize growth and vitality, which works so well in the kitchen, a space connected to nourishment. I have a whole blog post of flowers in Feng Shui that you can read HERE.
4. Style with functional beauty
One of the best ways to decorate your kitchen island is to use what you already have, but elevate it.
Display:
Wooden cutting boards
Marble mortar and pestle
High quality oil dispensers
Linen tea towels
Utensil holders
This works really well for smaller islands where decor needs to serve a purpose.
5. Create height variations
Flat styling feels lifeless. Interior designers will always add items of various heights.
Combine:
A tall vase
A medium candle
A low bowl
This creates movement and dimension.
6. Incorporate natural materials
According to the elements in Feng Shui, the kitchen is connected to fire and water. To help ground the energy, you will need to add earth elements, and your kitchen island is the perfect place for this.
Think:
Wood
Stone
Terracotta
Marble
Linen
Greenery
The earth element is especially important for newer homes where the kitchen can feel cold and sterile.
7. Embrace minimalism
Over decorating can lead to visual clutter even when your kitchen island isn’t messy. Decorating with a few key pieces and not over filling is all you need. In Feng Shui, physical space creates room for new opportunities to flow in and around your home.
8. Change your decor with the seasons
Seasonal decor keeps the energy in your home with natures rhythm. I really believe that there are seasons for a reason and we are meant to live in sync with them. There is a reason why some fruits and vegetables only grow at certain times of the year, and the weather outside changes with a new season. We are also meant to live in these cycles.
You kitchen island decor could be one way you sync the energy in your home with what is happening around us. To do this is to live in flow.
9. Add a bowl of abundance
A fruit bowl filled with fresh, ripe fruit is a symbol of the abundance in our lives.
Best fruits to display:
Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges
Pomegranates
Green apples
A round, solid bowl is best.
10. Kitchen island styling mistakes
Overcrowding
Using multiple tiny decor pieces
Ignoring daily functionality
Letting clutter, like mail, pile up
If you find that your kitchen island can not stay clear and organized no matter what you do, check to see which area of the Bagua map it is in. Maybe the reason is deeper. See if there is a connection and see if you can find ways to create lasting changes in the area of life it is connected to.
